One thing to keep in mind: the beach is pretty narrow and can be almost completely submerged during high tide, so check the tide times before you go. Not that it’s actually that difficult, but you do have to get there by foot on the Batteries to Bluffs Trail (about 10 to 15 minutes, depending on which direction you come from). What to know: Keep in mind, the reason this is SF’s most secluded beach is because it’s also the hardest to access. (It’s also known for its native wildflowers and blue-green serpentinite rock formations.) Even if you prefer to avoid frostbite, it’s also a great spot for bird watching, probably because dogs aren’t allowed. (The nudists, on the other hand, are just as prevalent, if not more so.) The beach has views you’ll never get sick of-perhaps the best of the Golden Gate Bridge from outside the Gate-and is hidden amongst steep cliffs, which is one of the reasons it’s so popular for people who want to literally let it all hang out. Marshall’s Beach, the most secluded beach on this list, is like a mini Baker Beach (it’s located just north of its more popular counterpart) but without the crowds. San Francisco’s beaches are pretty amazing and worth a visit any time of year, even if feeling the sand between your toes might come with a mild form of frostbite. Sorry SoCal, but our views kick your views’ asses any day of the week, from bridges to headlands to shipwrecks and more. And hey, there are at least a couple of days a year when we brave the elements in actual bathing suits. ![]() The constant fog, relentless wind, punishing waves, and precarious terrain give them their charm. ![]() And while those stereotypes all hold true for most of the Golden State’s southernmost beaches, our coastline is 840 miles long, which means all kinds of weather and terrain, including NorCal’s, which is far more moody and rugged than the postcards would have one believe.īut just to be clear: This isn’t us complaining. The idea of a California beach conjures visions of endless sunshine, bikinis and boardshorts, surfers hanging ten, warm water perfect for swimming, and nary a shirt in sight.
